Fancy staying in a historic home with an open fireplace, arched windows, and sloped ceilings? Look no further than this pet-friendly cottage, ideal for families of four. The hillside location means there are outdoor steps to climb, but the scenic setting and landscape views are worthwhile. We love the Italianate garden, though an unfenced pond calls for eagle-eyed parenting. You'll be just one mile from the centre of Dartmouth, yet we recommend hiring a car to explore Devon's striking coast.

Hill Retreat

If you’ve always wanted to stay in a lighthouse in Cornwall, well here’s your chance. This beautiful home is part of a fully working lighthouse, established in 1619 and has an enclosed courtyard garden with a picnic table and benches for alfresco lunches. We should mention that during periods of fog and mist, an automatic, electric fog signal sounds, but don't worry, ear plugs are provided. If that doesn’t faze you then, this magical setting within the Lizard Peninsular won’t disappoint. Cliff tops walks are on your doorstep and attractions such as Lands End and the beguiling Kynance Cove are nearby. The village of Lizard has shops, restaurants and a friendly pub only ¼ mile away too.

Sail the Seas

This rustic, 17th-century mill has been turned into a luxury nook in the Scottish Borders. You can see the old but still operating waterwheel, contrasted against the roses and flowering lavender on the old miller's house next door. A wood-burning stove sits are the heart of the home, keeping things cosy warm in winter (your host will leave detailed instructions on how to light it so you’ll become an expert). The classy, aubergine-purple kitchen is well stocked with artisan crockery and everything you need to cook up a holiday meal. The mill’s original mezzanine floor has been converted into a plush bedroom with a roll-top bath. Heading outside, you’ll find a small, private woodland garden with table and chairs. Exploring the rest of the old mill site you might spot owls and hedgehogs in the forest, heron and otters by the millpond and acquaint yourself with the friendly resident sheep. Heading into the small village of Lauder, three miles away, you’ll find a handful of craft shops, coffee shops and a local deli too.  

The Old Mill House

This warm and inviting home is in the grounds of the old vicarage estate, having originally been the stables. It’s nestled in the heart of the Lake District, between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite. The home boasts beautiful views down the valley towards Sawrey, Grizedale Forest, and the Old Man of Coniston. It’s just a short walk from Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, and is surrounded by a wild meadow planted with fruit and nut tree orchards – this is certainly a picturesque spot for a romantic escape. We love the freestanding bathtub and the wood-burning stove of this comfortable, cosy home-from-home.

Walking in the Rain

A five-minute walk from Brook’s rugged coastal path and golden beach, the fresh sea air is never far from this isolated cottage. In a huge old farmhouse-style building, your quarters have tons of countryside character. Timber beams support the high vaulted ceilings, warm wooden flooring can be found throughout, and original, rustic barn-like doors keep things traditional. That said, every modern convenience is available, although some have a vintage edge like the red Smeg fridge. Leisure certainly hasn’t been forgotten about either, with board games and an outdoor play area to keep the whole family entertained. While the little ones romp in the garden, relax on the patio with a pot of tea. And when dinnertime strikes, you can light up the barbecue to dine alfresco on a balmy summer evening. As the home is located in the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (one of only forty-six such spots in the UK), the prized landscape is exceptional for walking, fossil hunting, and windsurfing. But if you do fancy something a little more urban, the island’s main town of Cowes is just a twenty-five-minute drive.

Palomino Cottage

Tucked away on a quiet cul-de-sac in Deal's conservation area, this studio is one for the artists. Belonging to Steve Thomas, who created Big Biba and was Sir Paul McCartney’s personal designer, the walls are adorned with Steve's work. Bold and inspiring, it's also cosy for a stay along Kent's coast. The beach and pier are only minutes away on foot, with The Royal St George's Golf Club a short drive from your front door. Though there is no garden, you can always sit out in front of the studio and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. 

The Painted Lily

Drop your bags and make yourself at home in this modern and stylish apartment. Situated in Chichester, just a twenty-minute walk from the town centre and a twenty-five-minute drive from West Wittering Beach, this home makes for a convenient sightseeing base. There are apartments in this residential complex, so expect to see and hear your neighbours from time to time. There’s a practical kitchen for whipping up home-cooked meals and a cosy living space for sharing a bottle of wine after a waterfront stroll along Chichester Harbour.

Chi Charm

Located in the picturesque village of Harrowbarrow, with sweeping views of the Cornish countryside and Tamar Valley, this Grade II-listed building is sure to impress. Inside, it’s thoroughly up to date with a sleek white and grey colour scheme. The double-height ceilings and clever use of glass make the place feel extra spacious and bright, while a wood-burning stove adds a sense of cosiness. When the weather is on your side, spill out onto the south facing patio for sunshine all day long. After a tasty barbecue lunch, ramble through Kit Hill Country Park or take the thirty-five-minute drive down to Tregantle Beach for wind-whipped walks along the unspoilt sands. Come home in the late afternoon, salty-haired and ravenous, and dig into hearty fare at the traditional pub, just a fifteen-minute stroll from your doorstep. 

The Chaplain

Located in Cambridge's newest neighbourhood of Eddington, this sleek one-bedroom apartment has plenty of room to relax after a day of exploring, either on the comfy sofa or on the large bed. Cambridge is a cyclists' city, and given that you're only a couple of miles from the rambling streets and quaint waterways that crisscross the centre, we'd recommend a bike to get around – especially given Eddington's eco credentials. The flat is decorated in a soothing colour scheme of dusty pink and oceanic blues that fill you with a sense of calm. Downstairs, you'll find an on-site bar, restaurant, coffee shop and co-working space. If you're in town for work, Cambridge Business Park and other campuses are nearby. In addition, it's a short taxi, bike or bus into the historic centre and well-located for access to Stansted Airport, a thirty-five-minute drive away.

Praying Mantis

Set in a new, sustainable development in the northwest of Cambridge, this modern home is the opposite of the period buildings you may expect in this historic city. Avant-garde and sophisticated, it's a sleek and stylish space with all the independence of a self-contained flat, plus all the benefits of a hotel. You'll feel at home straight away, thanks to its wheelchair accessible open-plan layout, comfortable furnishings and striking modern styling. There's a small but perfectly formed kitchen area if you're cooking at home, as well as a little dining table and a cosy sofa. The shower room has grab rails and a seat, making it easy for everyone to use, and the king-size bed is super comfy. If you're feeling sociable, mingle in the communal guest lounge or head up to the roof terrace with a drink. Elsewhere in the building, there's a fitness room and you can opt to have breakfast each morning in the on-site restaurant. Just ten minutes from the heart of the city, getting around is easy too.

Barberton Daisy

This modern apartment is the perfect base for a solo traveller or couple looking to explore the beautiful market town of Halstead. Ingeniously designed to maximise the space and comfort, the living area feels much bigger than it really is (it's actually a studio flat). With the use of the industrial-style shutters, the bedroom is cleverly cut off from the open-plan kitchen and dining area, creating a cosy spot to enjoy a restful night's sleep or power through work at the dedicated study area – perfect for those in town on business. The spacious kitchen offers all the mod-cons for a comfortable long-term stay, with sleek worktops and appliances for preparing home-cooked perfection. Natural light pours in through the crittall windows making it a bright and airy apartment, while the private balcony opens the flat out to the lovely green views all around. Step out of the building and be right in the heart of Halstead, boasting boutique shops, coffee lounges and fine-dining restaurants to discover. Plus, you're a twenty-minute drive from Colchester town centre and less than thirty-five minutes from Stansted airport up the road.

All-In-One

At this lovely stone farm cottage, adopting the slow pace of nature and taking it easy is widely encouraged as you unwind in its fairy tale atmosphere and quirky interior. Located within a courtyard of a working farm, it’s an animal lover’s dream – not to mention the well-known farm shop on your doorstep so you can pack the country-style kitchen with fresh, local produce. When you aren’t snuggled up on the sofa or catching a quick cat nap in your rustic bedroom, you can sip your morning coffee on the private patio, taking in the blooming garden, while saying hello to a cow or two. We can vouch for the panoramic views over the rolling green hills and country fields too. Although two people can enjoy the comfortable bed, we would happily stay here alone for a calming solo trip. Guests are welcome to wander around the extensive garden, which even includes a picturesque bridge over the lilly pond (don’t worry, we’ve checked for trolls). And if you can drag yourself away from the peace and quiet of your pretty barn conversion home, you can spend days exploring the beach at Colwyn Bay, or the promenade of Llandudno, and even the mountains of Snowdonia National Park. All located within a 15-minute drive.
